Here are a few back to school tips for Howard County parents.
The end of summer signals the start of a new school year, which can be both exciting and challenging for children. After months of relaxing, it is time for kids to adapt to the structured school schedule once again. The abrupt change can lead to busy mornings, tired afternoons, and an overall struggle to adjust. Parents must help facilitate this transition and set their children up for success. Here are a few back to school tips for Howard County parents.
Prioritize Healthy Sleep Schedules
Most schools start much earlier in the morning than is ideal for children’s developing brains or their natural sleep cycles. This means that it’s up to you and your child to make sure they go to bed early enough to get the recommended amount of sleep. This is no easy feat, but with practice, it’s possible. Children five to ten years old need ten to eleven hours, and children ten and up need eight to nine hours at a minimum.
Have a Plan for the First Day
If your child is prone to anxiety, don’t wait for it to appear in the form of tummy aches, tantrums, or other behaviors on the first day of school. Talk about what’s going to happen and brainstorm solutions for when anxiety starts to take hold. You may also wish to let your child’s teachers know of any anxiety issues that might manifest throughout the school year
Get Back into the School Routine
A week before school starts, help your kids go to bed earlier and get up earlier. This will help make the alarm a bit easier to handle when the first day of school rolls around. For your youngest kids, practice lunch. If they will be bringing their lunch to school, make sure they can open the items you pack. Make sure all kids know how to budget their lunch break so they don’t run out of time to eat.
Limit Screen Time
During the summer, children may have spent more time on screens, which can disrupt their natural sleep-wake cycle. As the school year begins, gradually reduce their screen time and encourage them to engage in alternative activities like reading, playing board games, or spending time outdoors. Minimizing screen exposure before bedtime will promote better sleep.
Encourage Independence and Responsibility
Empower your child to take ownership of their school routine by encouraging independence and responsibility. Involve them in setting their alarm, packing their school bag, and preparing their clothes for the next day. This will instill a sense of responsibility and self-discipline. For older children, encourage them to start their homework on their own and only help them if they ask.
